School of Marxism was approved by the Standing Committee of TGU Committee of CPC in April 2011 as an independent secondary organization. In 2017, it was approved as the first key schools of Marxism in Tianjin. It is one of the first three key schools of Marxism in Tianjin.
Observing the general strategic deployment of TGU, the School of Marxism takes “distinctive development” as its guideline and centers on “establishing the school by thoughts, consolidating the school by excellent teaching, invigorating the school by excellent discipline and strengthening the school by precise scientific research”, making efforts to develop itself to be a teaching and research-oriented school with distinctive features. The school is in charge of teaching ideological and political theory to all undergraduate and graduate students of TGU, meanwhile it is responsible for researching Marxist theory, discipline construction and cultivating graduate students, etc. In 2016, it was approved to grant master’s degree to Ideological and Political Education cadicates, in 2018, it was approved as First-level Discipline Master’s Degree Program in Marxist Theory. Now it has four research directions: “Basic Principles of Marxism”, “Research on Localization of Marxism in China”, "Ideological and Political Education" and “ CPC Building”.
The school attaches great importance to strengthening the construction of the teaching staff. There are 51 faculty members, including 8 professors, 16 associate professors, 24 master's tutors, and 71% of teachers have doctoral degrees. Many teachers have research experience as a postdoctoral researchers. The school has one member of Teaching Guidance Committee of the Ideological and Political Theory Course of Ministry of Education; one nominee for the Annual Influential Teachers of the Ideological and Political Theory Courses Among Colleges and Universities in China; three experts of National Ideological and Political Theory Courses Teaching among Colleges and Universities. Three teachers were selected into the list of “National Preferential Fund Program for Young and Middle-Aged Teachers on Ideological and Political Theory Course of Ministry of Education”, and two prize winners of “A Wonderful Class” on “Research and Construction Program of Ministry of Education on Marxist Theory”.
The school began to enroll graduate students in 2007 and has accumulated rich training experience, with a remarkable training effect. At present, there are more than 60 graduate students. Many students have achieved excellent results in the provincial and ministerial competitions.
In the past five years, the employment rate of graduate students of the school reaches 98% . Most of the graduates work in the party and government organs, colleges and universities, party affairs department of enterprises and public institutions, etc.
Concentrating on the education function of ideological and political theory course, the school insists on the principle of putting students first, giving priority to moral education and aiming to let students get lifelong benefits from ideological and political theory course, love and never forget it. Many media have reported on the reform and construction of the ideological and political theory course of TGU such as People's Daily, Guangming Daily, China Education News, Tianjin Daily, Tianjin News (Tianjin Satellite TV).
The school establishes the development idea that “teaching quality has an important bearing on survival, scientific research improves development ”, the mechanism of “creating platform by disciplines, proposing subject by teaching, making achievements by scientific research and letting students learn these achievements” has come into being. It strengthens teaching and management on postgraduates, and active efforts have been made to create practice bases and research and innovation platforms for postgraduates, improving the competenceof postgraduates in all aspects. In recent years, the faculty members have made joint efforts to complete projects with more than 10 million yuan funds, and undertake 6 national projects such as the National Social Science Fund, more than 100 provincial projects such as the Humanities and Social Sciences Program of the Ministry of Education, and won more than 20 first prizes of the Tianjin Social Science Achievement Award, etc.; more than 100 articleshave been published on important journals.
