The School of Mechanical Engineering is one of the three earliest schools of TGU. Its predecessor is Department of Mechatronics, which was initially founded in the 1950s  when TGU (formerly known as Hebei Textile Engineering College) started independent education. After 60 years of development, a complete undergraduate-master-doctor-postdoctoral education system and advanced research structure have taken shape.

The school has six undergraduate majors such as mechanical engineering, mechanical design and manufacturing, automation, mechanical and electrical engineering, industrial design, measurement and control technology and instruments, and construction environment and energy application engineering, among which "mechanical engineering" is national characteristic specialty, while "mechanical engineering (textile machinery research program) is a pilot major of National Excellent Engineer Program. The school has a post-doctoral research station for mechanical engineering, one A-level discipline doctoral program and one A-level discipline master degree program in Mechanical Engineering. It can train full-time and on-job graduates for Master of Engineering in the fields of "mechanical engineering" and "industrial design engineering".

There are 111 full-time faculty members in the school, including 23 professors and 43 associate professors,  3 Leading Talents among Universities of Tianjin, one Expert with Outstanding Contributions in Tianjin, and 2 Teaching Masters of Tianjin. The school boasts a well-balanced teaching staff in terms of professional titles, academic research, age and education background, who are qualified to  meet the needs of teaching and research and can be in accordance with the development  of disciplines and majors  in personnel training, ranging from undergraduate, master, doctor to postdoctoral studies.

There are 1,800 undergraduate students and 362 postgraduate and doctoral students. Currently, more than 130 students are enrolled every year. In recent years, there are more than 520 graduate students and 48 doctoral students have graduated. The school has cultivated a large number of advanced technology and management talents for  national textile machinery industry and Tianjin equipment manufacturing industry.  The school actively responds to the call of “Belt and Road Initiative”  and trains high-caliber scientific and technological personnel for countries along the route. In recent years, 10 international students  are recruited every year for master and doctor degree.

In recent years, great progress has been made in disciplinary development and scientific research. Research  fields has been geared to forefront at home and abroad, such as new textile machinery, industrial robots, dynamics and control, integrated manufacturing systems, laser processing and surface engineering. At present, there are provincial and ministerial scientific research supporting platforms such as Tianjin Modern Electromechanical Equipment Technology Key Laboratory and Tianjin Industrial Design Center .The School of Mechanical Engineering has carried out basic and innovative research in  design theories and methods of new textile machinery, industrial robot systems and intelligence, mechanical system dynamics, machining forming processes and equipment. In recent years, it has undertaken more than 200 projects including  National Science and Technology Supporting Project,  National Natural Science Foundation Project,  National Defense Science Research Foundation, Tianjin Key Research Project and other major horizontal scientific research projects such as Equipment and Technology for Carbon Fiber Multilayer Angle Online Weaving. A number of key technological issues have been solved, a number of research results have been applied in the production of China Textile Machinery (Group) Co., Ltd. and other enterprises, and there are a total of more than 20 technology awards at provincial and ministerial level.

The school attaches importance to launch academic exchanges and cooperation with high-level universities and research institutions at home and abroad, it has established close ties in academic exchanges and cooperation with more than 20 well-known universities at home and abroad such as Oxford University, Harvard University, Stanford University, Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, Birmingham University, Duke University, Tsinghua University, Peking University, etc. and fruitful results have been made in exchanges and cooperation in terms of cooperation in running schools, scientific research, exchanging professors and students, double-degree programs, and academic education for foreign overseas students, which becomes increasingly famous and competitive at home and abroad with each passing year. In recent years, more than 20 visiting scholars have been sent to theUnited States,Britainand other countries, and more than 30 foreign students have been recruited. More than 40 foreign scholars have been invited to come to the school for academic exchanges. Teachers and students have gone abroad to participate in academic conferences for more than 60 person-times.
